R454B, developed as a replacement refrigerant for R410A
R454B is a blended refrigerant composed of R32, a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), and R1234yf, a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO).
R454B was developed as a replacement refrigerant for R410A. While R410A has an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of 0, solving the problem of ozone layer depletion, its global warming potential (GWP) is approximately 2,090, meaning it has 2,090 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide.
R454B addresses this issue by reducing the GWP to 466, thereby mitigating the environmental impact associated with R410A. Although R454B has a relatively low GWP compared to R410A, it still has 466 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide, indicating the need for refrigerants with even lower GWP.
Moreover, unlike the non-flammable R410A, R454B exhibits mild flammability and is classified as an A2L refrigerant. Therefore, careful handling is required, and various quality standards such as JRA, UL, and IEC mandate leak detection for R454B.
R454B and R32, R1234yf
One component of R454B, R32, is widely used as a single refrigerant.
Like R454B, R32 also has an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of 0. Additionally, being a single refrigerant, it offers the advantage of allowing for additional charging in air conditioning equipment.
However, R32 has a global warming potential (GWP) of 675, which is higher than that of R454B, posing a challenge in terms of greenhouse effect. Therefore, in R454B, the greenhouse effect is mitigated by mixing R32 with R1234yf, which has a GWP of less than 1.
Flammability of R454B
R454B has been evaluated by the Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE) and is considered to meet the conditions for specific inert gases. Specific inert gases refer to fluorocarbons that exhibit slight flammability.
Recovery Container for R454B
The FC containers used for the recovery of R454B have been evaluated by the Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE) and are considered to meet the conditions for Class 3 FC containers.
R454A, R454B, R454C
In addition to R454B, there are other refrigerants such as R454A and R454C that are also mixtures of R32 and R1234yf. These refrigerants have different mixing ratios of R32 to R1234yf, resulting in varying global warming potentials (GWP).
R32 : R1234yf | GWP | |
---|---|---|
R454A | 35 : 65 | 238 |
R454B | 68.1 : 31.9 | 466 |
R454C | 21.5 : 78.5 | 148 |
